Expert and General Advice on Portuguese and German Law

Disputes have different natures, forms and stages. SUA provides legal advice to most kinds of national and international conflicts and assures client representation in every stage of a dispute or of a potential dispute. SUA’S founder acts as Counsel as well as Arbitrator, being available for arbitration appointments.

pre-trial stage

Contract analysis, risk assessment, claim management, problem-solving and settlement negotiations.

trial-stage

Representation of clients:

  • in arbitral tribunals in international and domestic arbitration (institutional or ad hoc) including emergency and fast-track arbitrations.
  • in court in cross border litigation and domestic litigation (Portugal and Germany) notably interim measures and declaratory lawsuits in civil, commercial, insolvency, corporate and IP law, as well as criminal law.

post-trial stage

Enforcement of arbitral awards and court judgements, challenges of foreign and arbitral awards, lodging appeals of court judgements (and arbitral awards, when possible).

AS ARBITRATOR

The Founder of SUA, Pedro Sousa Uva, is available for international arbitration appointments, either as co-arbitrator, sole arbitrator or chairman:

  • where a Portuguese fluent speaker arbitrator is required, notably in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé e Principe (all Portuguese speaking countries in Africa) Timor, Macau and naturally Portugal;

  • where an English speaker arbitrator is required in disputes to be resolved by Portuguese Law or other laws deriving or inspired in Portuguese Law (e.g.: Portuguese speaking countries in Africa mentioned above);

  • in bilingual proceedings in Spanish, English or Portuguese;

  • in Germany, in proceedings where English or Portuguese language has been chosen, irrespectively if Portuguese law applies;

  • in Portugal, either as co-arbitrator, sole arbitrator or chairman;

  • anywhere in the world, when one of the above criteria applies.

  • Dr. Maria-Christina Englmann is also available to serve as arbitrator.
